FILM:
On April 8, at 8 pm, the Avalon Theatre will screen NOWHERE IN MORAVIA (Díra u Hanušovic). Called "darkly humorous" by Variety, the directorial debut of Miroslav Krobot centers on the everyday life of a small village and a girl stuck in the middle of "nowhere." Because of it's stellar cast, the film was nominated for 13 Czech Lions and won for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
More about the film:
German teacher Maruna (Tatiana Vilhelmová) runs the local pub. Marriage prospects look slim, since the pickings include an indecisive mayor (Ivan Trojan) who spends most of his time hunting deer, the village idiot Olin (Jaroslav Plesl), and the womanizing roofer Kódl (Lukáš Latiňák), who chases after every passing skirt. On top of this, Maruna looks after her domineering mother (Johanna Tesařová), and her sister Jaruna (Lenka Krobotová). When Jaruna finds a way out, Maruna seems stuck in the middle of “nowhere” all alone with her mother and her suitors. But one day, something unexpected happens here, nowhere in Moravia… (Directed by: Miroslav Krobat, 2104, 102 min., Czech with English subtitles)
Awards:
Nominated for the Crystal Globe Prize for Best Film at the Karlovy Vary IFF (2014) and for the Czech Film Critics’ Award for Best Supporting Actress (Tatiana Vilhelmová, 2015). Received 13 Czech Lion nominations including Best Film, Best Director, among others.
