CineMatsuri
Japan-America Society's Cherry Blossom Film Festival
Japan-America Society of Washington, DC presents
CineMatsuri™
The First Japanese Film Festival in the Nation's Capital
Part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival ®
The Japan-America Society of Washington, D.C. (JASW) is pleased to announce that it will present its second annual Japanese Film Festival in Washington, D.C., from Sunday, March 22 through Thursday, March 26, at the E Street Cinema.
The festival, called CineMatsuri™, will screen five recent Japanese films, each in a different genre, that showcase the diversity and richness of Japanese filmmaking today. All films will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles.
CineMatsuri will open on Sunday, March 22 with "Uzumasa Limelight," a moving, nostalgic portrait of the men behind the golden age of chambara films, the distinctive Samurai sword-fighting film genre for which Japan is famous. The New York Times says that Ken Ochiai, the 31-year old director who was educated at USC and NYU, conjures a sweet, simple swan song to a waning art form and those who practice it.
Film screenings continue each evening at 7 pm, concluding on Thursday, March 26 with The Little House (Chiisai Ouchi), directed by the famed Yoji Yamada, which has been nominated for nine Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Further information about CineMatsuri and each film to be screened can be found on the festival's website, at www.cinematsuri.org.
Tickets are $13 per film, and should be purchased on-line at the CineMatsuri website.
CineMatsuri™ is produced by the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASW), which has promoted understanding of Japanese culture for over half a century. CineMatsuri™ is an official event of the National Cherry Blossom Festival® and is supported by the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Information and Culture Center.
