With President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea scheduled to meet with President Obama this October in Washington, D.C., questions about the evolving role of the Korea-US Alliance will be front and center. Korea still faces an array of regional challenges, including relations with its neighbor to the North (despite the glimmer of cooperation that followed border violence this summer), ongoing efforts to improve ties with Japan, and walking a fine line with rising China. The Korea-US Alliance is a factor for each, both behind the scenes and in terms of optics. CFR Senior Fellow Scott Snyder will discuss the role of the alliance for each issue, and how it can live up to its full potential on all fronts.

Scott Snyder is one of the foremost experts and authors on Korea and Asian regionalism. Prior to joining CFR, he was a senior associate in the international relations program of The Asia Foundation, where he founded and directed the Center for U.S.-Korea Policy and served as The Asia Foundation's representative in Korea (2000-2004). He was a senior associate at Pacific Forum CSIS, an Asia specialist at the U.S. Institute of Peace, acting director of Asia Society's contemporary affairs program, a Pantech visiting fellow at Stanford University's Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (2005-2006), and the recipient of an Abe fellowship by the Social Sciences Research Council (1998-99). He has provided advice to NGOs and humanitarian organizations active in North Korea and serves as co-chair of the advisory council of the National Committee on North Korea.
