The Embassy of the Czech Republic invites you to the exhibition ALEXANDR HACKENSCHMIED aka Sasha Hammid: Drawings and Photographs, curated by Petra Kosková Hammid and Pavel Vančát, and the lecture Alexandr Hackenschmied / Sasha Hammid: From Photography to Cinema on March 10, 2016, at 6 pm. The talk with images and short movies will span the long career of A. Hammid from avant-garde Prague of 1920-30s, then emigrating to the US in the 1940s and his collaboration with Maya Deren, to the late documentary movies which brought him the Academy Award.

Alexandr Hackenschmied aka Sasha Hammid: Drawings and Photographs

Alexandr Hackenschmied (1907-2004) is one of the leading figures of Czech modern photography and film. In the late 1920s, he started to be published in photography magazines of the time in the style of Neue Sachlichkeit and began his career in film. During the 1930s, he became one of the most important Czech filmmakers. From the 1940s, he succeed in the USA as an author of documentary and experimental films. In 1947, he became an American citizen and changed his name to Alexander Hammid. In 1965, he won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for his film To Be Alive!. The exhibition shows some of Hackenschmied’s lesser known photographs as well as his drawings and watercolors from the 1930s and 1940s influenced by the art group Die Blaue Vier (The Blue Four).

Pavel Vančát (1976) is a free-lance curator and writer based in Prague. He focuses on contemporary art and history of photography. He serves as head curator of StartPoint, prize for the graduates of European Art Academies (www.startpointprize.eu), is the author of several monograhps (e.g. Miroslav Tichý, Jidnřich Přibík, Jan Svoboda) and numerous thematic and monographic exhibitions.
