Join us for the opening night of the Second Annual Korean Culture Week, presenting the acclaimed Seoul-based Bereishit Dance Company and their recent contemporary dance performance, Balance and Imbalance

Under founding choreographer Soon-ho Park, Bereishit Dance Company approaches Korean traditional culture from a contemporary view, keeping its fundamental value rather than merely borrowing or transforming it. Balance and Imbalance juxtaposes dancers alongside drummers and singers of the traditional Korean vocal storytelling genre pansori, which itself combines music, movement, and emotion. This experiment between East and West is a study of differing movement sensations. To the unbroken rhythm of Korean traditional drums, dancers develop a clarity and power that goes beyond national borders. Their unabashed physical control, somewhere between breakdance, artistry and urban coolness, simultaneously illuminates and criticizes their cultural roots.

This event is part of the Second Annual Korean Culture Week at the Kennedy Center, Nov. 7-9. To learn more about the schedule and other performances, visit our website here.
