OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 4 NORDIC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL AT SCANDINAVIA HOUSE
Start November off with the 4th annual Nordic International Film Festival, the biggest Nordic Film Festival outside Europe, at Scandinavia House in New York. Opening this year’s festival is the Swedish Danish feature film Holiday, by Swedish director Isabella Eklöf.
The Swedish official contribution to the 91st Academy Awards – Border, by Ali Abbasi - screens for the last day at IFC Center in New York, at various times throughout the day.
OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 4 Satyagraha by Cirkus Cirkör/Folkoperan at BAM
Swedish contemporary circus group Cirkus Cirkör and Swedish opera company Folkoperan interpret Philip Glass’ operatic account of Mahatma Gandhi’s experiments with civil disobedience in South Africa. “Satyagraha” has already toured to rave reviews in Sweden and can be experienced at Brooklyn Academy of Music.
NOVEMBER 6 & 9 Helena Hallberg at Bitter End and at Silvana
Swedish singer and multi-instrumentalist Helena Hallberg is slated to perform twice with her pop/jazz band Helena Hallberg and the Heathens. At Bitter End in West Village, New York on November 6 at 8:30 pm, and at Silvana in Harlem, New York, on November 9 at 9 pm.
Internationally acclaimed Swedish chef Magnus Nilsson from the famed 2-star Michelin restaurant Fäviken comes to Scandinavia House in New York to talk about his new book “The Nordic Baking Book” at 7 pm.
NOVEMBER 9-10 Johannes Heldén at ISCP Open Studios
Swedish contemporary artist Johannes Heldén will participate in a two-day exhibition of international contemporary art at the ISCP Fall Open Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
International premiere of the documentary “The Feminist”, about the Swedish politician and feminist trailblazer Gudrun Schyman, during the documentary film festival DOC NYC. Director Hampus Linder and subject Gudrun Schyman will be present. At Cinepolis Chelsea, New York, at 2:30 pm.
NOVEMBER 13 Gunhild Carling at the Bickford Theatre
Swedish jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling - famed for playing three trumpets at once - will be appearing at the Bickford Theatre in New Jersey at 8 pm.
The Swedish film Becoming Astrid, a true story of a character-defining period in the life of acclaimed Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren, is previewed at Scandinavia House, in New York, at 7 pm.
