Join us for a special celebration of Korean culture during the Kennedy Center’s annual Lunar New Year 2020 festivities, featuring free performances, activities, and hands-on cultural experiences! In partnership with the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C., REACH Winter Lantern PLUS: Korea starts Thursday, January 30 and goes until Sunday, February 2 with daily evening programs in several of the Kennedy Center’s new outdoor cultural spaces. To help ring in the year of the rat, which officially starts Jan. 25, the Kennedy Center will also present a special display of winter lanterns in recognition of the first winter season at the REACH.
Visitors and families can experience many dynamic cultural activities throughout the four days of REACH Winter Lantern PLUS: Korea, including traditional percussion and dish-spinning performances by Feelak Group , collaborative mural painting with local artist Julia Chon , coloring traditional Korean fans and masks, creating name tags using Korean calligraphy, Korean tattoo stickers, dressing up in traditional Korean Hanbok clothing, and taking photos in a special Korean photo zone. Local artist Myoung Won Kwon will also demonstrate Korean large-scale calligraphy as he creates an original work for audiences and Korean kite-flying master Gitae Lee will demonstrate traditional Korean kites and teach attendees how to fly them.
