The Swallows of Kabul/ Les Hirondelles de Kaboul
Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.
As part of the D.C. Francophonie Cultural Festival 2020, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy will present a screening of The Swallows of Kabul, a Swiss-French co-production.
The Swallows of Kabul takes place in 1998, when Kabul is in ruins and occupied by the Taliban. With its graphically rich, 2D watercolor-style animation, The Swallows of Kabul is an adaption of Algerian writer Yasmina Khadra's literacy fiction. The film is a moving testimony of life under Taliban control in the Afghan capital, highlighting a dangerous act or humanity during a violent time via the stories of two couples whose fates become intertwined through death, imprisonment and self-sacrifice.
The film was co-led by two female directors: Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec and Zabou Breitman.
The film is in French with English subtitles.
Tickets are free of charge.

Gateways to New York
Friday, March 27, 2020 6:00 - 7:45 p.m.
and
Sunday, March 29, 2020 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.
The Architecture & Design Film Festiva: DC at the National Building Museum presents Gateways to New York, a story about the great Swiss structural engineer Othmar H. Amman, who emigrated to New York in 1904 and redefined the art of bridge building in America.
Amman's own life, career, and breathtaking constructions were framed by the steady, dynamic acceleration of 20th century America - the roaring twenties, mass motorization, the Great Depression, war, suburbanization, and the economic boom that led to modern consumer society. Othmar Ammann's life straddles the 19th century and then end of Classical Modernism, an era he embodied in the truest sense of the word and which, as the most influential architect of steel bridges of his time, he fundamentally shaped.

Passionate, tireless, Botta is one of the few architects who has built places of prayer for the three main monotheistic religions and is now designing a mosque in China.

Architecture of Infinity
Sunday, March 29 4:00 p.m.
Swiss filmmaker Christoph Schaub's unsual, poetic, and visually stunning survey of contemporary sacred spaces and church buildings considers the work of architects Peter Zumthor, Peter Maerkli, and Alvaro Siza Vierira; artists James Turrell and Cristina Igelsias; and percussion virtuoso Jojo Mayer.
Making a case for a spirtual life in architecture (and other arts), the film also relates the spaces on view to the natural world. The faintly floating cinemtaography suggests an otherwordlineess; and Schaub turns his film into a personal journey through his earlier life, when his fascination with architecture began.
