IN A NUTSHELL:
The German Embassy Washington and Street Art for Mankind (SAM) are excited to celebrate the opening of a massive climate action mural by German artist Hera in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood of Washington, DC, to accelerate awareness of climate change and the essential role that women play in tackling the issue.
Join us for an opening ceremony featuring remarks by top officials, uplifting music by award-winning singer/songwriter Emma G, and light refreshments courtesy of the German Embassy Washington.
ABOUT THE MURAL
Created by the internationally renowned German muralist Hera and curated by SAM, the 135-foot-high mural will serve as a vivid reminder that we need all of society to tackle climate change. Women and girls must be included when it comes to finding solutions for addressing the climate crisis. For more information and to download the #BehindtheWall app, visit SAM's ClimateAction page.
The mural features a wise African-American “Mother Nature”, personification of the Earth, surrounded by a grown-up woman farmer planting a tree to support biodiversity and a child watching a bumblebee (a bee species endangered by climate change) approaching a flower.
Children from Eaton Elementary School, the Embassy Adoption Program partner school of the German Embassy, and the German International School Washington D.C., will figuratively plant more flowers as they complete the artistic masterpiece during a workshop led by DC street artist Cita Sadeli (Miss CHELOVE).
BACKGROUND
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face today. And time is running out, as we already see devastating consequences all over the globe. With this mural, the German Embassy Washington and SAM want to recognize the essential role that women play in tackling climate change globally and the crucial need to ensure their equal and meaningful participation in climate action.
